Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhup\u0101da founded ISKCON in 1966, it was not simply to create a spiritual organization, but to establish a dynamic, global movement rooted in the ancient science of Krishna consciousness. As the spiritual architect of ISKCON, Srila Prabhup\u0101da laid down the foundation stones with great care, foresight, and divine insight. As ISKCON continues to expand in reach, diversity, and responsibility, it becomes essential to reflect on the non-negotiable aspects Prabhup\u0101da emphasized for future generations to preserve. Here is a ranked list of those core aspects \u2014 the spiritual pillars he repeatedly asked us to uphold:<\/p>\n

1. \u015ar\u012bla Prabhup\u0101da\u2019s Books Must Be the Foundation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

At the top of the list is Srila Prabhup\u0101da\u2019s unwavering instruction: \u201cMy books will be the law books for humanity for the next ten thousand years.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

He tirelessly wrote over 70 volumes of translations and commentaries on Vedic scriptures such as the Bhagavad-g\u012bt\u0101<\/em>, \u015ar\u012bmad-Bh\u0101gavatam<\/em>, and Caitanya-carit\u0101m\u1e5bta<\/em>. He considered these works as his greatest contribution and asked his disciples to distribute them far and wide.<\/p>\n

Maintaining the original integrity<\/strong> of his writings \u2014 both in meaning and spirit \u2014 is a sacred duty. They are not just texts; they are living guidebooks infused with divine realization.<\/p>\n

2. Daily S\u0101dhana and the Morning Program<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Prabhup\u0101da stressed the importance of daily devotional practice<\/strong>, beginning with the morning program. Mangala \u0101rati, chanting 16 rounds, hearing class, Deity worship, and guru-p\u016bj\u0101 are not optional traditions \u2014 they are the lifeline of a devotee\u2019s spiritual strength.<\/p>\n

He emphasized that without regulated s\u0101dhana, one cannot make meaningful progress or maintain the purity of consciousness required for seva. The morning program was designed by him personally<\/strong>, and he expected ISKCON to safeguard this spiritual routine in every center, home, and heart.<\/p>\n

3. Strict Adherence to the Four Regulative Principles<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Srila Prabhup\u0101da often reminded devotees that spiritual life requires discipline. He instituted four core vows for initiated devotees: no meat eating, no intoxication, no illicit sex, and no gambling.<\/p>\n

These principles are not cultural preferences \u2014 they are spiritual boundaries<\/strong> meant to protect the soul\u2019s progress. He warned that diluting these principles would destroy the spiritual power of ISKCON. They serve as the moral spine of the movement, without which our integrity fades.<\/p>\n

4. Chanting the Holy Name \u2014 Harin\u0101ma Sank\u012brtana<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Chanting Hare Krishna was central to Prabhup\u0101da\u2019s personal practice and his global mission. Whether on the streets of New York or the beaches of Mumbai, he wanted the Holy Name to resound in every town and village<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

He strongly encouraged public harin\u0101ma<\/em>, daily personal japa<\/em>, and organized n\u0101ma-ha\u1e6d\u1e6das<\/em>. The Holy Name, he said, is both the means and the goal. No matter how many projects we develop, if the Name is not being glorified and heard, the soul of ISKCON becomes weak.<\/p>\n

5. Deity Worship Done with Purity and Regularity<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Srila Prabhup\u0101da personally established Deities in temples around the world and trained devotees in arcana<\/em>. He emphasized that once Deity worship is started, it must never stop.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Deities are not idols \u2014 they are Krishna Himself, accepting our service. He warned against neglect and urged temple managers and pujaris to maintain regularity, cleanliness, and love in all offerings. He saw Deity worship not just as ritual, but as a way to deepen our personal relationship with the Lord<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

6. Unity Through the GBC System<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Srila Prabhup\u0101da established the Governing Body Commission (GBC) not just as an administrative tool, but as Krishna\u2019s managerial representative<\/strong>. He instructed that the GBC should lead collectively, always consulting \u015b\u0101stra<\/em>, s\u0101dhu<\/em>, and guru<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Though imperfect at times, the structure of leadership was meant to avoid centralized power<\/strong>, encourage accountability, and preserve unity in diversity. Prabhup\u0101da warned that if this system were dismantled or ignored, chaos and fragmentation would follow.<\/p>\n

7. Devotee Care and Vaishnava Relations<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Though he was strict, Prabhup\u0101da was also incredibly compassionate. He wanted devotees to live like a family<\/strong>, supporting and nourishing one another.<\/p>\n

He often said, \u201cLove and trust among devotees is the real success of ISKCON.\u201d<\/em> Fights, offenses, and politics go against the very grain of Vaishnava culture. To him, how we treat each other was a reflection of how we treat Krishna<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

8. Preaching with Boldness and Relevance<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Prabhup\u0101da was not interested in creating a quiet monastery. He wanted ISKCON to be an active preaching movement<\/strong> \u2014 distributing books, holding festivals, teaching philosophy, cooking pras\u0101dam, and transforming lives.<\/p>\n

At the same time, he advised that preaching should be intelligent, culturally sensitive, and boldly truthful<\/strong>. He gave flexibility in form but insisted on firmness in content. Today, podcasts, dramas, social media, and campus preaching all serve this goal \u2014 as long as the purity of message is intact.<\/p>\n

9. Protecting the Brahmac\u0101r\u012b and G\u1e5bhastha A\u015bramas<\/strong><\/h3>\n

He wanted balanced communities \u2014 with trained brahmac\u0101r\u012bs, stable g\u1e5bhasthas, and respected v\u0101naprasthas. He warned of the dangers of unregulated household life or forced renunciation. ISKCON\u2019s long-term health, he believed, depended on spiritually balanced devotees living with clarity in their ashram roles.<\/strong><\/p>\n

10. Loyalty to the Parampar\u0101<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Finally, Srila Prabhup\u0101da always reminded us that we are servants of the disciplic succession<\/strong>, not creators of a new ideology. His mission was to carry forward the teachings of Lord Caitanya Mah\u0101prabhu and the six Gosv\u0101m\u012bs.<\/p>\n

He said, \u201cWhat I am giving is not mine \u2014 it is from Krishna and the guru parampar\u0101.
