Ranked: Instructions of Srila Prabhupada That Reshaped My Sadhana

  1. “Chant the Hare Krishna maha-mantra 16 times every day”
This was the first instruction that required serious commitment. It was not easy. Some days, my chanting felt like a race; other days, like a burden. But gradually, as I remained steadfast, chanting turned into a connection. Srila Prabhupada would often say, “Your beads are your connection to Krishna.” This one practice taught me discipline, dedication, and inner focus.
  2. “Get up early in the morning and attend mangal arati”
I once thought that getting up early in the morning was only for yogis in the Himalayas. But Prabhupada made it clear: spiritual mornings shape spiritual life. By attending mangal arati – whether virtually or at home – I began to experience the peace, purity, and power of those sacred early hours. This instruction brought clarity and peace to my entire day.
  3. “Read my books every day without fail”
Earlier, I would read occasionally. But I was deprived of the daily nourishment I received from Prabhupada’s purposes. He didn’t just write books—he expressed his spiritual realization in words. Reading every day became more than study; it became a dialogue with my spiritual grandfather, and a shield against delusion.
  4. “Avoid offenses and perform pure service to the Holy Name”

Learning about the ten offenses against the Holy Name was humbling. I realized that chanting was not just about quantity but about quality. Prabhupada’s emphasis on chanting mindfully inspired me to work on the inner attitude—with humility, not with mechanical repetition.

  1. “Serve the deities with cleanliness and devotion”

Before, worship of the deities seemed ornamental. But as I followed Prabhupada’s guidance on cleanliness, mindfulness, and devotion, I began to experience the presence—Krishna Himself in front of me. I realized, “This is not an idol. This is Krishna, who is receiving my love.”

  1. “Live simply and always think of Krishna”
Prabhupada’s simple, high-minded lifestyle was a revolution in the materialistic world. I began to let go of unnecessary complexity. From overthinking to overconsumption, his instruction helped me simplify my habits and focus my thoughts on Krishna.
  2. “Associate with devotees and listen to hari-katha”
I used to think sadhana was solitary. But Prabhupada emphasized sadhu-sanga – listening to Krishna-katha in the company of devotees. This gave me strength, perspective and accountability. Even a short conversation with a true devotee would often rekindle my enthusiasm.
  3. “Share this knowledge – help others become Krishna conscious”
Sharing Krishna consciousness seemed intimidating at first. But I found that the more I shared – even a book, a quote or a conversation – the more Krishna revealed himself to me. Prabhupada called this “compassion in action.” This instruction showed me that preaching is purifying.
  4. “Be humble and give respect to everyone”

I learned that humility does not mean thinking less of yourself – but rather thinking less of yourself. Srila Prabhupada constantly reminded us that false pride blocks grace. Learning to serve without seeking recognition opened my heart far more than I expected.

  1. “Never forget Krishna. Always remember Him.”

This instruction encompasses all the rest. Whether through chanting, service, reading, or kirtan, Srila Prabhupada urged us to keep Krishna at the center. The success of our sadhana is not measured only by what we do – but also by how much we remember Krishna while doing it.
