Most Eye-Opening Statements from Srila Prabhupada’s Room Conversations

  1. “We are not this body. This is the beginning of knowledge.” In a room full of scholars and scientists, Prabhupada would often begin from here – not with mysticism, but with this simple but fundamental truth. He would say plainly, “If you don’t know this, what is the use of your PhD?” This one sentence shattered all false identifications and laid the foundation for true devotion. “They don’t know that the body is changing but the soul is not changing. They are simply wasting time – going to school, college – wasting life.” (Talk in the room, May 31, 1974, Geneva) 2. “You are all my limbs. If you don’t preach, how will I live?” This statement deeply affected many devotees. It was not about numbers or fame – it was Prabhupada’s emotional dependence on the sincerity of his disciples. He looked upon each devotee as a part of his body. When he said this, it was not a strategy – it was love in the service of Krishna.
  2. “Without rigorous sadhana everything will fail.”

One might expect Srila Prabhupada to celebrate external successes. But in personal conversations, he repeatedly warned: “If you neglect your sadhana, everything else will collapse.”

Whether you were managing temples or printing books, if your chanting and reading were weak, he would say, “You are building a skyscraper on sand.”

  1. “Don’t try to be God. Try to serve God.”

In dozens of private conversations with yogis, gurus, and sadhakas, Prabhupada made it clear: spiritual life begins with humility. The obsession to be powerful, enlightened, or liberated was all subtle egoism. His antidote was quick and simple: Serve Krishna. Don’t try to be Krishna.

  1. “If one chants without offense, everything will be attained.”

When asked repeatedly what the secret was, Prabhupada would insist: “Chant purely.”

He was not just stressing quantity. He talked about quality, about avoiding offenses, about chanting with feeling and meditation.

He even said: “Even if you are illiterate or poor, pure chanting will give you all perfection.”

  1. “This Western civilization is a polished animal society.”

This shocked many. But Prabhupada did not say it with hate – he said it with compassionate readiness. In dozens of roomfuls of conversations with politicians, professors and even journalists, he fearlessly pointed to sense gratification, meat-eating and atheism as symptoms of a civilization disconnected from real wisdom.

“They are killing cows and talking about peace. It is animal mentality with a suit and tie.” (Room talk with Indian ministers, 1975, Delhi) 7. “The greatest danger is when devotees stop taking it seriously.” In a late-night talk, Prabhupada once said: “Maya does not rest. The moment you think, ‘Now I am safe,’ she attacks.” He warned that the subtle ego of being a devotee can be more dangerous than being materialistic. Without humility, regulation, and vigilance, even a devotee can fall. 8. “You stay in ISKCON and follow strictly – you will go back to God.” This was not just a promise – it was an assurance to struggling hearts. He did not expect us to become perfect overnight. But if we stayed, served, and followed as sincerely as possible, he guaranteed: “Krishna will take care.” Many such room talks ended with this fatherly assurance. 9. “True love is service. Not emotion.” When asked about love, Prabhupada replied: “Love is not just saying ‘I love Krishna’ – it is shown by how much you serve Krishna.” His clarity transformed our vague feelings into a clear standard: real love means responsibility, dedication, and sacrifice. 10. “I am not giving you anything new. I am simply repeating my Guru Maharaja.” This is perhaps the most humble statement. Srila Prabhupada, who changed the world, never claimed originality. He showed that what pleases Krishna is not invention, but faithful transmission. In his room, he would often say this softly, but firmly – pure devotion is rooted in tradition, not in personality.
